Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case | William Hair Haseler, Birmingham 1900

An exquisite late-Victorian sterling silver pocket cigarette case, meticulously hand-engraved with an elegant foliate and floral scrollwork pattern typical of the year 1900. The front features a central shield-shaped cartouche beautifully engraved with a period monogram.

This piece was crafted by the renowned manufacturing silversmith William Hair Haseler (W.H.H.), celebrated for his high-quality craftsmanship and historic design partnerships with Liberty & Co. London during the Art Nouveau era — making this a particularly collectable and historically significant example.

Hallmarks

The hallmarks are split across the lid and base — a standard practice for hinged cases to protect the integrity of the silver during stamping. Both parts bear matching partial marks confirming all components are original to the piece:

  • Maker's Mark: W.H.H — William Hair Haseler, Birmingham
  • Assay Mark: Anchor — Birmingham Assay Office
  • Fineness Mark: Lion Passant — guaranteed sterling silver .925
  • Date Letter: Lowercase 'a' — datable exactly to 1900

  • Material: Solid Sterling Silver (.925) with vermeil (gold-gilt) washed interior
  • Weight: 75g
  • Dimensions: 80mm × 60mm × 16mm
  • Decoration: Hand-engraved foliate and floral scrollwork; shield cartouche with period monogram to front

Condition

Excellent antique condition with wonderful character consistent with 125 years of history. We describe condition honestly so you know exactly what you are buying:

  • No dents, splits, repairs, or heavy structural damage
  • The hinge is strong and the case closes securely with a firm snap
  • The interior retains its original warm vermeil gold-gilt lining, showing only minor age-appropriate surface wear
  • The original elastic retention band has perished — as is standard for a piece of this age — but the internal brackets remain fully intact, solid, and undamaged, allowing easy replacement if desired
  • The silver has been lightly and professionally polished using specialist care to preserve the beautiful dark patina highlighting the depth of the exterior engravings

Please inspect all photographs closely to verify condition details — the item pictured is the exact piece you will receive.
