Antique George V Sterling Silver Christening Mug | Mackay & Chisholm, Birmingham 1934

An authentic late-Interwar period sterling silver christening mug, crafted in a classic tapered form. The piece sits proudly on a flared pedestal base and is finished with an elegant traditional scroll handle.

The body features clean lines and a striking, deeply engraved Celtic-style patterned border decoration — typical of high-end 1930s British silversmithing. The mug retains its original Mackay & Chisholm silk- and velvet-lined presentation box, adding exceptional provenance and gift appeal.

A wonderful addition for serious silver collectors, historic nursery displays, or as a sophisticated antique gift with genuine 90-year-old historical patina.

Hallmarks

The side of the body carries a crisp set of British hallmarks stamped cleanly into the silver:

  • Maker's Mark: M&C LTD — Mackay & Chisholm Ltd, prominent Edinburgh silversmiths
  • Assay Mark: Anchor — Birmingham Assay Office
  • Fineness Mark: Lion Passant — guaranteed sterling silver .925
  • Date Letter: Uppercase 'K' in clipped hexagonal cartouche — datable exactly to 1934

  • Material: Solid Sterling Silver (.925)
  • Weight: 90g (approx. 2.89 troy oz)
  • Height: Approx. 2⅝" (6.7cm)
  • Rim Width: Approx. 2½" (6.4cm)

Condition

Excellent antique condition with wonderful character consistent with over 90 years of history. We describe condition honestly so you know exactly what you are buying:

  • The mug shows little to no signs of actual use — the silver is structurally perfect and free of any dents, splits, or repairs
  • Features a charming, genuine period inscription reading “Marjorie”
  • Normal, light surface tarnish commensurate with age (can be polished to a mirror finish if desired)
  • The original presentation box is in very good condition with strong hinges and virtually no signs of wear to the inner silk or velvet lining
