Antique Sitzendorf Porcelain Figurines Pair — No. 56 | 18th-Century Pastoral Couple

An exceptionally vibrant, authentic early 20th-century German hard-paste porcelain figurine pair, beautifully hand-painted and decorated with delicate applied foliage by the renowned Sitzendorf Porcelain Factory in Thuringia.

The composition features a beautifully executed, classic pastoral couple dressed in colourful 18th-century period attire gathering fruit, flowers, and game.

The gentleman stands proudly holding a game bird alongside a basket of blossoms, while his female companion mirrors him with a matching basket of fruit.

Both figures stand atop intricately sculpted, rococo-style plinths adorned with gilded scrollwork and delicate hand-applied flora, perfectly capturing the romanticised elegance of classic European porcelain artistry.

Originally cast from the factory's historic moulds, this pair showcases the exquisite balance of fine detail, brilliant overglaze colouration, and elaborate modelling that makes early 20th-century German porcelain highly coveted by collectors around the world.

Maker's Marks & Stampings

The base of each figurine carries authentic factory maker's markings applied directly to the porcelain underside:

  • Factory Stamp: Underglaze blue crowned cursive "SX" script monogram, used by the Sitzendorf factory between 1918 and 1949.
  • Model Mark: Incised factory model/shape identification number "56" located on the underside of the female figurine base, identifying the corresponding design mould.

Condition

Very good antique display condition with minor wear entirely consistent with its age and delicate production history. We describe condition honestly so you know exactly what you are buying:

  • Paint & Gilding: Displays exceptional colour retention and vibrant overglaze detailing — the rich red, yellow, and blue hues along with the elegant gilt scrollwork remain bright, crisp, and visually striking.
  • Repairs: No restoration, professional repairs, or paint touch-ups of any kind — 100% original throughout.
  • Structure (Gentleman): Very good antique condition. The main body, limbs, and features are completely sound and free from cracks. On close inspection, there is a minor fleabite on one of the applied leaves on the bottom-left of the base, and a tiny bit of wear on the leaf tips inside his flower basket. These are minimal and do not distract when displayed.
  • Structure (Woman): Very good antique condition. Structurally sound throughout, with the only notable wear being a minor, isolated 2–3mm chip to the tip of one of the applied leaves on the upper right side of the base foliage. This does not impact structural integrity and is barely noticeable when displayed.
