Large Art Deco Katzhütte Dancer Figurine — Signed Stephan Dakon | c.1930

An exceptionally elegant, authentic early 20th-century German Art Deco ceramic figurine, beautifully hand-painted and slip-cast by the world-renowned Hertwig & Co. (Katzhütte) factory in Thuringia.

The composition features a graceful dancing lady caught in a dynamic, sweeping posture. Crisp, flowing lines run throughout her voluminous dress folds, classic cloche hat, and elegantly extended stance — perfectly encapsulating the energy of the Jazz Age.

The figure stands on a raised oval plinth base, finished in smooth underglaze polychrome paints with sophisticated colour transitions running from rich violet down into a delicate blush pink. This specialised German earthenware glazing creates a glossy, vibrant finish that emphasises the dramatic movement and fluid contours of the sculpture.

Originally designed by the Austrian master sculptor Stephan Dakon, this large-scale model showcases the exquisite balance of grand scale, substantial weight, and expressive modelling that makes 1930s European figural art highly coveted by collectors worldwide.

Maker's Marks & Stampings

The figurine carries authentic factory maker's markings applied directly to the ceramic base:

  • Factory Stamp: Green Katzhütte "cat in house" trademark logo stamped to the underside, confirming German origin
  • Designer Signature: Incised "DAKON" signature on the reverse top edge of the base plinth, confirming the original sculptor's mould
  • Production Marks: Alphanumeric code "A9" below the main logo; incised factory number "80" for internal mould sizing and workshop tracking
