Antique Georgian Scottish Provincial Silver Teaspoons | William Hannay, Greenock c.1810
An authentic late-Georgian Scottish provincial silver set of four teaspoons, crafted in a classic regional form by the esteemed silversmith William Hannay of Greenock.
The pieces feature elegant oar-end handles seamlessly transitioning into long, clean ovoid bowls, each finished with a beautifully engraved script monogram at the terminal. The unadorned, minimalist aesthetic highlights the fine localised craftsmanship typical of early 19th-century regional Scottish silversmithing, operating independently outside of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
A wonderful addition for serious silver collectors, historic dining displays, or as a sophisticated antique gift with genuine 215-year-old historical patina.
Marks
The reverse of each stem carries a clear, highly legible set of Scottish provincial maker and town marks:
- Maker's Mark: WN — William Hannay, esteemed regional silversmith of Greenock
- Town Mark: Anchor / Ship motif — the historic trade symbol for the Greenock assay area
Note: Scottish provincial silver of this period was not subject to the same standardised assay office hallmarking as English silver, making these maker and town marks the primary authentication marks.
